our origins and how we got here
As a result of the merger of Westar Energy and KCP&L in 2018, energy was created.
We now strive to provide you more economical energy options, solutions, and lifestyle-compatible options.
How it all began.
A section of what is today known as energy was founded in 1881. Lysander R. Moore, Joseph S. Chick, and Judge William Holmes each donated $4,000 to the acquisition of a monopoly contract for the provision of electricity to two counties.
In 1882, the group changed its name to the Kawsmouth Electric Light Company, and from a location in the West Bottoms not far from the junction of 8th and Santa Fe, it served 13 commercial clients in downtown Kansas City. One of the first businesses to use automated regulators was this one. By the end of the year, 48 local businesses had signed on as clients.
The company changed its name to the Kansas City Electric Light Company in 1885 to better reflect its objective.
J. Ogden Armour, an heir to a packing firm, purchased the Kansas City Electric Light firm in 1900 and concentrated on expanding its capabilities to assist supply energy to his railway.
1902: Another utility dynasty was just getting started in a different region of the Midwest. The Green Light & Power Company, operated by Lemuel K. Green, would later change its name to Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L), West Missouri Power Company, Utilicorp, and lastly Aquila.
1909: In a separate development, the American Power & Light Company established the Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) in Kansas to manage the utilities in the cities of Frontenac, Pittsburg, and Wichita.
1910: By the end of the year, KG&E had swiftly expanded to serve three villages and 5,525 consumers.
After Kansas City Electric Light Company split from its railroad subsidiary in 1916, Kansas City Light & Power Company (KPL) was established. In 1917, Joseph F. Porter succeeded the previous manager as the company's manager and managed the construction of more capable and efficient facilities.
Following reincorporation and the acquisition of the Carroll County Electric Company in 1922, the organization's final name was changed to the Kansas City Power & Light Company (KCP&L).
KCP&L had 199,603 customers in 1948.
1950: KCP&L established itself as a separate firm following the separation of its parent corporation.
KCP&L had more than 280,000 consumers in 1966.
KPL and KG&E merged in 1992 to establish Western Resources, which serviced 560,000 customers and delivered natural gas to 1.06 million people in three states.
In 1996, Western Resources acquired ownership of Westar Resources' natural gas division in return for 45% of ONEOK, INC. The investment was sold between 2002 and 2003 as part of the company's growing focus on becoming a pure electric utility.
Western Resources' shareholders approved the name change to Westar Energy in 2002.
In 2008, KCP&L and Aquila, a company established in 1902 by the Green family, merged.
KCP&L and Westar Energy merged in 2018 to establish energy, which provides customers with greater savings, sustainable energy, and solutions and alternatives to meet their needs.
